Since my appearance on KARE 11, professionals have asked me for more information on copy bibles. Who needs one? How do you create one? What should it contain? These are just a few of the questions I’ve received, and while there are general answers for each question – a lot of it is tailored to the individual asking.
Copy bibles are a necessity for every business professional. These self-promoting, professional business portfolios guarantee a memorable first impression. Utilizing this powerful communication tool can help you maintain a positive reputation, establish a personal brand, build your communication confidence, and help you get what you want.
The elements of your copy bible
Copy bibles are pre-crafted messages about you for you to use online, in person, and over the telephone to promote you. It’s a key piece needed when figuring out how to market yourself, and how you can get ahead by putting these thoughts into words. The primary elements of your copy bible include your mission statement, vision statement, elevator speech, and professionally polished responses to critical and controversial topics related to business or life.
- Your mission statement explains how the world would suffer if you didn’t exist. It should inspire others to take action, e.g., select your services, seek employment, and/or talk positively about you.
- Your vision statement describes where you’re going and what you’re going to achieve. It should be compelling, aspirational, and measurable.Your elevator speech should clearly articulate in short phrases what it is that you do, and how others can benefit from
- knowing and working with you. It should include proof points or evidence that you can accomplish what you say you can.
- Your polished responses help you manage uncomfortable situations, such as making a mistake, letting someone go, raising prices, or how to deal with conflicts. They also help you take advantage of opportunities, such as securing meetings, closing sales, and motivating your team.
Crafting your copy bible
If you’re considering making a big shift in your professional or personal life, a copy bible can help form those thoughts and feelings into actions.
Begin by writing what is true for you. Use everyday, common language without any buzzwords – you can flex your vocabulary, but don’t let it distract from your actual message. Most people set aside an afternoon to write the first three basic elements, but don’t be surprised if you don’t get it all down on the first try. It’s important to revisit this content regularly and to keep it up to date.
Your polished responses will take more time. Keep in mind your copy bible should always tell the truth and cast yourself and others in a favorable light. Be clear on the problems you have or currently experience and how you solve them. When crafting responses to difficult situations, be sure to take into account both sides of the story. Nobody likes someone who comes off as egotistical; showing you consider others’ perspectives and points of view is essential when flexing your professional maturity.
Make sure you’re saying what you want to say, in the right way
My clients find their copy bibles an indispensable piece of their professional portfolio. When creating your copy bible, I suggest also keeping a digital copy on your desktop, so you are ready for that next email or phone call when opportunities arise. Eventually, you’ll know your copy bible like the back of your hand, but keep a cheat sheet for quick reference handy until then.
I review copy bibles so professionals are communicating what they actually want to say, and are delivering that message in the best possible way. For some, I even write their copy bibles for them, if they are needing more assistance. I’ll ensure your mission, vision, and elevator speech have clarity and impact, and that they are portraying you in the best possible light. A few minor word changes can turn a humdrum elevator speech into an unforgettable one.
Your copy bible isn’t the only promotional piece you should be keeping in your portfolio.
My book, The Truth About Scandal, is full of important information and professional recommendations to help you build up the skills to confidently communicate so you can get ahead. When you purchase this book, you also receive a library of downloadable material to help you create your business portfolio, including a template for creating your copy bible.
When in doubt, refer to a communications coach
I make sure your polished responses protect your reputation regardless of the situation. Insiders are often too close to the situation to craft mutually satisfying responses, which is why an outside review is so important.
