Your business strategy needs to leverage advanced communication techniques — the lifeblood of selling. If you’re not already focused on fine-tuning what you say and how you say it, it’s time to get started.
Just ask my client who was at a loss after being stonewalled by a huge prospect. Let’s call him Dan.
Dan was struggling to set a meeting with an important prospect. Dan knew his product was right for this key decision maker, but his prospect had little interest in moving forward. To help Dan get the face-to-face meeting he wanted, I provided him with the right words to use and explained how to deliver them.
Here’s how I did it:
First, I had Dan draft a “meeting request” email to his prospect. I revised it to make it more effective. You see, Dan needed this prospect to take action, but he couldn’t find the right words. Like many professionals, he wrote what he wanted to say, NOT what his reader wanted to hear.
In fact, Dan hadn’t followed any of my must-do’s for effective communication:
- Focus on what‘s most important to your reader.
- Use an actionable, compelling subject line.
- Spare your reader lengthy background details.
- Tighten your language by eliminating unnecessary words.
- Organize content into succinct sentences and paragraphs.
- End presumptively with a precise suggestion of next steps.
Next, I coached Dan on how to reinforce his message in a phone call to his prospect. This follow-up call is a critical step many people miss.
Then, I drove home the message not to take no for an answer. When the prospect emailed back and said the timing was off, I wrote another email with Dan to help him keep the conversation going.
Finally, I celebrated with Dan when he landed the big meeting with this key decision maker. Our work wasn’t done – we still had to close the sale – but Dan’s confidence and influence with the client had skyrocketed. Dan was ready.
